China, Nigeria Celebrates International Women Day in Grand Style
It was a joyous celebration night as various groups gathered at the Chinese Cultural Center to commemorate the International Women’s Day celebration. The event took time to celebrate and appreciate the input of its female workforce. It was a gathering of culture and creative big wigs in the private sector, academia, government, the diplomatic corps and Abuja residents. The event which was organised by the China Cultural Centre in Nigeria in collaboration with Female Artist Association of Nigeria (FEAAN) focused on haring cultural legacies and humanity of the two giant countries in Africa and Asia. The audience was held spell bound in the fashion show to celebrate the International Day for Women tagged “Women in Culture “. It featured diverse activities including Fashion parade by Nigeria and Chinese models, Art exhibitions, music, etc.
At the opening ceremony, His Excellency Li Xuda, the Cultural Counselor, the Chinese Embassy in Nigeria said the occasion was to share cultural exchanges adding that women have contributed a lot to the humanity. In his words, “I want to express my congratulations to all women on the International Women Day. Women contribute immensely to the progress of human kind. Why we are organizing the cultural activities today is to promote the cultural exchange of our cooperation between China and Nigeria.
The Counselor further says, “You know I am the Cultural Counsellor of the Chinese embassy and the Director China Cultural Centre and my responsibility is to promote our traditional friendship through the cooperation and the exchange of our fields through cultural exchange. You can see the Nigeria models and Chinese female staff from the embassy they performed together with the Nigerian fashion models in this fashion show. I see this is a cultural exchange together.”
He said,” In China, our government treats women equally with their male counterparts. We should do everything possible to treat our women equal both at home and at work. We really want to continue with this kind of program. This is not the first time we are holding this Programme but this year was on a larger scale. Women have performed marvelously well in the world.”
One of the participants in the women fashion parade show, Xu Jiung, said women play an important role in the society. She said “Well, I just arrived here for like a month now. I am very excited because this is my first time to come to Africa. I have been in Europe and others but am glad to be here. I am a woman so I think. In those days in China there was a pressure for women to hard jobs but now the society has changed women can play an important role in the society. Time changes, people changes and women become greater.”
Mrs. Joy Ebirim , the Deputy Director in charge of Exhibition, National Coucil for Arts and Culture asked women not to relent in playing their roles in the family and society at large. Ebirim says, “there is room for women to perform. My message is that we should not relent as women. We should continue to play our God given role supporting the men in the family of making sure that everything goes on fine in the family because if we have a good home, good children it will translate to a good and better nation.”
