Haley says US withholding US$255 million in aid from Pakistan
The United States has formally announced that it will withhold 255 million US dollars in aid from Pakistan, claiming the Asian nation has failed to cooperate fully in America’s fight against terrorism.
US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley made the announcement on Tuesday, days after President Donald Trump had made his intention to block the disbursement clear.
“The administration is withholding 255 million [US] dollars in assistance to Pakistan. There are clear reasons for this. Pakistan has played a double game for years,” Haley told reporters at the UN. “They work with us at times and they also harbor the terrorists that attack our troops in Afghanistan.”
“That game is not acceptable to this administration. We expect far more cooperation from Pakistan in the fight against terrorism,” Haley added.
Trump tweeted yesterday, saying that Pakistan had given the US “nothing but lies & deceit” despite the 33 billion US dollars the country has provided in aid over the last 15 years.
